Shaped by Upheaval, Gen Z Runs on Disruption

Raised on canceled milestones and constant pivots, today’s newcomers show up adapting along the way.


I’ve spent my career inside the machinery of work, shaping communications strategies, navigating culture shifts and guiding leaders around how to communicate through disruption. I thought I knew where the rules of work were written. But the clearest lessons about what’s ahead seem to be coming from across my dinner table from my kids' generation, the newest entrants to the workforce.


Enter Gen Z. This generation was forged by the disruption of a pandemic. Proms canceled, grand graduation ceremonies reduced to rituals on a screen, months of isolation and the tragic loss of loved ones. Gen Z honed their discipline in marshaling energy, clarity in prioritizing and finesse in turning disruption into direction. I've witnessed this in my own two college-aged kids and their friends now wrapping up school and gearing up to enter the workforce. As with most broad sweeping stereotypes, those of Gen Z as entitled, distracted or deficient in soft skills can be hasty.


Today, Gen Z makes up nearly 18 percent of the U.S. labor force, surpassing Baby Boomers for the first time, and is projected to hold close to 30 percent by 2030, filling roughly 50 million jobs (U.S. Department of Labor, 2024; Chmura, 2024). And they’re entering a world where AI is transforming work at exponential speed.


Students who entered college only a few years ago with majors once seen as sure paths to the workforce are graduating in a job market already reshaped, demanding the grit to retool, rebuild and reinvent — before they even pass the Go line.


Resourcefulness in Action

At home, it shows up in useful ways. When I’m staring down a half-assembled piece of furniture or trying to extend our Wi-Fi signal, my go-to line has become: “Hey, can you figure this out for me?” What stands out is their resourcefulness (usually with that same phone I’ve told them to get off of a thousand times), tackling the problem head-on, pulling in what they need and staying steady until they’ve nailed the solution. Those very qualities of resourcefulness, persistence and composure under pressure are ones that contribute to success in the workforce today.


The Pulse of Feedback

Feedback used to be a ritual. Annual reviews, marked-up drafts, carefully chosen words. Gen Z treats it as a constant flow with a blunt text, a quick aside or the definitive emoji 👍🙄🔥🤣 that closes a loop.


Ideas are challenged and sharpened in real-time. Learning happens continuously, long before a review cycle begins. That same appetite for immediacy shapes how they work, as well as how they prepare — always anticipating the next skill to master or the next shift to navigate.


Careers and Life as a Mosaic

One of the most familiar assumptions about Gen Z is that they are overly reliant on technology. They’re constantly connected. Yet academic work, jobs, side projects, creative pursuits and relationships coexist, each adding dimension. 


Life and work are approached as composites of skills and experiences, layered with breadth and adaptability. And as AI redraws the map of work at unprecedented speed, this fluid approach is a strategic necessity. A recent study published on arXiv found that roles requiring generative AI tools demand 36.7 percent more cognitive skill and 5.2 percent more social skill than roles without AI usage (arXiv, 2025).


What can look like dependence on technology is, in practice, a capacity to adapt at speed — mastering new tools, discarding the obsolete and staying fluent in a world where rule change is on overdrive.


What Endures, What Evolves

When I wrote about Gen X last month, I reflected on the instincts that shaped us: resourcefulness, patience, resilience and a talent for reading between the lines. Those qualities remain vital.. Gen Z builds momentum by learning and recalibrating in motion. 


Adaptability is the throughline. What endures is continuity and collaboration with each generation layering its interpretation of purpose and progress, indispensable in a time of relentless disruption.


The acceleration of AI only heightens this reality, making endurance and adaptability indispensable. Strength is sustained through dialogue across generations. The future of work won’t hinge on technology alone, but on our ability to act on that exchange. #GenZ #FutureOfWork #GenerativeAI
